Professional Tennis Player Venus Williams was in the news this week for something completely unrelated to tennis! A wrongful death lawsuit was filed this week against Ms. Williams after her car entered an intersection and was cut off by another car. That set off a chain of events that resulted in a fatal crash with a third car according to police and a video released Friday.
A security camera video shows Williams’ car stopped at a red light behind a white car as she is leaving her Palm Beach Gardens Neighborhood. Once the light turned green, the white car turned onto a six lane boulevard and Ms. Williams began to drive forward. A dark colored sedan then turned left in front of her and she was forced to stop. As Williams continued forward in the westbound lanes, her SUV was struck on the passenger side by a 2016 Hyundai Sedan driven by Linda Barson. A dark colored sedan subsequently turned left in front of her and she was forced to stop. As Williams drove forward in the west bound lanes and her SUV was struck on the passenger side by a 2016 Hyundai sedan. That sedan was driven by Linda Barson.
The statement from the police said Barson’s light had turned green just prior to Williams moving in front of her. Linda Barson’s elderly husband Jerome Barson died June 23 from injuries suffered in the crash. Barson’s estate has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Williams seeking unspecified damages and Linda Barson suffered numerous fractures to her arm. Michael Steinger is the attorney for the Barson family and he says the video clearly shows Williams caused the crash by “violating the Barsons’ right of way.” “There is no evidence disputing that Ms. Williams’ was in the intersection on a red light. Additionally, the witnesses confirm the Barson’s had a green light and lawfully entered the intersection,” Steinger said in a statement.
