There is a brand new roundabout opening on August 6, 2018 at Sheldon and Bradshaw. It’s a long held opinion of many traffic engineers that roundabouts may be safer than traditional intersections in many ways. One study of 144 roundabouts in Minnesota showed the fatal crash rate was reduced by over 85% after installation. While these facts may interest Elk Grove and Sacramento drivers there is more to the story.
It was pointed out in one of the studies that the biggest benefit of roundabouts is they eliminate “T-bone” accidents, which occur when one car crashes head-on into the side of another vehicle. Roundabouts force drivers to slow down in order to merge. Once a driver is in the roundabout, he or she is moving with the rest of traffic, reducing the risk of a major car crash. Ultimately, car accidents resulting in serious injury were reduced by over 80 percent, and overall the crash rate dropped by over 60 percent when single lane roundabouts were studied.
What is of concern, and something our office has represented clients for is the number of accidents resulting in minor property damage and injury have increased. The number of these types of crashes rose almost 75 percent in roundabouts with a different number of circulating lanes that differed based on the approach. In complete dual roundabouts, which have two circulating lanes on all approaches, the rate of property damage car accidents rose more than 200 percent.
Regardless of the intersection type, drivers are responsible for following the laws of the road and staying alert to prevent accidents. Whenever a driver fails to stop at a stop sign or runs a red light and causes an accident resulting in serious injuries the driver can be held liable. When this happens we will gather evidence including police reports, statements from witnesses and medical information to show that the other driver was liable for the accident and illustrate the damages and reasonable compensation that should be sought.
