From 2016 to 2018 more cyclists died in traffic incidents in California than during any other three year period in the past 25 years. During that three year span 45 cyclists were killed and countless more injured according to the National Highway Transportation Administration. These alarming figures translate to about 3.9 fatal bike accidents per million people.
Experts point to numerous factors that have led to this increase. American are driving more miles due in part to the improving economy, distracted driving and smart phone abuse is increasing and drivers are buying more Sport Utility Vehicles and large trucks. Some analysts say there are also more bikes on the road.
“The more people are driving the higher the probability of an incident” said Jennifer Boldry, director of research at PeopleForBikes, a nationwide group that advocates for greater bike access and safety. Exacerbating the risks; Smartphones are ubiquitous in much of America and thousands of people die each year in accidents caused by distracted driving. Boldry also cited a study by the National Transportation Safety Board showing that “mid block’ collisions – in areas between intersections, where speeds tend to be higher tend to cause greater injury and more frequent deaths to cyclists.
