In 1952 PG&E dumped over 370 million gallons of wastewater laced with Chromium-6 into the wastewater supply of towns like Hinckley and Kettleman City. PG&E failed to inform and lied about this until 1987. PG&E blamed everything but their own behavior for increased cancer rates and birth defects until 1996 when they agreed to pay the 665 people harmed by this $333 million dollars.
In 1994 PG&E equipment sparked a wildfire in the Sierra. In 2008 a PG&E gas line exploded in Rancho Cordova killing one and injuring five. In 2010 a PG&E gas line exploded in San Bruno killing eight and PG&E was later convicted of six felony counts and fined $1.6 billion dollars for their behavior. The list goes on. A Public Utilities Commission audit in 2015 said PG&E had done little to change their behavior even after increasing executive compensation by over 90% while making a profit of over $4.8 Billion and receiving over $1 Billion in tax rebates. They now are asking for a new state law to continue and likely even encourage that bad behavior.
PG&E is not a victim here. The actual victims are those in the path of their behavior. While their victims lose loved ones, homes, memories, pets and have their lives changed forever, PG&E makes more and profit with less accountability.
