United States regulators and Stellantis confirmed this week that an exploding Takata air bag has killed another driver. Stellantis and the National Highway Safety administration reaffirmed warnings to over 250,000 owners of older Dodge and Chrysler vehicles to stop driving these vehicles until the faulty inflators have been replaced.
Stellantis announced in November 2022 two deaths that were caused by the defective air bags and they suspected a third death was caused by the inflators. Stellantis is the company previously known as Fiat/ Chrysler. The company urger people to stop driving Dodge magnum wagons, Dodge Challenger and Charger muscle cars and Chrysler 300 sedans from model year 2005 to 2010. Since 2009 exploding and otherwise defective air bags associated with Takata have killed at least 33 people worldwide including 24 in the United States.
Tens of millions of vehicles with Takata air bags are under recall. Long-term exposure to high heat and humidity can cause these air bags to explode when deployed. Such explosions have caused injuries and deaths. NHTSA urges vehicle owners to pay close attention to this recall and the actions to take as a consumer. The air bags included in this recall have defective inflators that have the potential to explode or cause the air bag to not inflate properly when it deploys.
Faulty seals on the inflator is believed to be the cause of the problem. If the inflator is not sealed properly, moisture can get into the propellant used to inflate the air bag and cause the inflator to malfunction. This could lead to the air bag deploying slowly during a crash, which means it won’t protect you as it’s designed. Or, it could also lead to the inflator deploying aggressively and even exploding. The metal parts from the exploding inflator could injure or kill someone.
