More than 100 Americans age 65 or older died each day from falls in 2021, a big increase from 2020 and the highest rate so far this century, a government study reports. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found 38,742 fall-related deaths among older adults that year––a 7.6 percent rise from 2020. (2) Bone and muscle loss can mean a fall causes more damage.
(3) Worsening eyesight and hearing can make it harder to pick up fall-risk cues.
(4) Blood-thinning medications making it harder to control bleeding.
(5) Other drugs can affect balance.
These factors can leave older people vulnerable to head injuries, which causes almost half of all fall-related deaths in those 65-plus, a separate study shows.
