The Elk Grove Police Department responded to a report of a stolen car Monday night, June 3rd. When officers located the car in question it was near Grantline Road and Highway 99. The officers attempted to pull over the vehicle in question and the driver fled the scene at a high rate of speed.
The vehicle in question entered a neighborhood and responding officers lost sight of it. As the driver was leaving a neighborhood near Laguna Blvd a crash happened and it hit a Nissan that was turning on to Franklin Blvd. Emergency services responded and the driver of the Nissan was transported to the hospital with life threatening injuries. On Tuesday the driver of the Nissan lost his life. The man was identified by the coroner’s office as 55-year-old Gregg Umipeg, of Sacramento.
The driver of the stolen car was a 13-year-old. The 13-year-old was also transported to a hospital. The teenager was later arrested on suspicion of several charges including felony evading and felony evading resulting in serious injury or death. He was booked into Juvenile Hall. Sadly, behavior such as this is becoming more common and the Umipeg family is now forced to pick up the pieces and move forward. We extend our heartfelt condolences to them.
