In the last week three pedestrians were hit and killed on Highway 99. The deaths are leaving a tragic mark on the families of those involved that will last a lifetime. It is hard to imagine why someone without a disabled car nearby would be walking along Highway 99, but regardless of fault, the mental trauma suffered by the drivers who struck those pedestrians is unimaginable.
Sacramento Criminal Defense Attorney Donald Heller said “It’s rare that I’ve ever seen someone without remorse in a vehicular homicide” and Heller has represented many drivers involved in pedestrian accidents. While the drivers were acquitted of any charges they were left traumatized. Heller went on to say “when a driver has actually seen the mangled body of the person he had hit, it had a huge emotional effect on him.”
California Highway Patrol Officer Mark Leavitt was asked if the drivers involved would face any consequences and his answer was “No, not specifically on the last three that just occurred. Pedestrians are not allowed to be on the road on the freeway.” The Officer went on to say that all three drivers stayed at the scene with no drugs on alcohol involved. If the CHP finds you walking on the freeway you will be cited because it’s illegal and obviously dangerous.
Even accidents where the driver is not at fault and is not physically…..can potentially change the course of his or her life. People involved in these situations should seek treatment from a qualified mental health professional to help them cope with the trauma they sustained. Since the treatment was as a result of a car crash your insurance or the insurance of the victim may pay for your care. If we can help you please reach out to our office.
