On Tuesday afternoon there was another fatal big truck crash on Southbound Interstate 5. Much the same as the big truck crash in South Sacramento in early September this crash also involved multiple vehicles with serious injuries. The California Highway Patrol reports that several people were transported to local hospitals with major injuries.
The CHP detained the driver who was cooperative and showed no apparent signs of intoxication. No reason was given for the truck failing to slow when it came upon stopped traffic on the interstate. Big trucks crashes are increasing on the state’s highways along with speeds. While it’s unknown if this driver was exceeding the posted speed limit he was going too fast for conditions (CVC 22350).
Big truck crashes carry with them the potential for serious injury and death due to the speed and weight of the vehicles involved. Many of us have seen big trucks exceeding the speed limit on the highway and we seldom take the time to consider how long it takes to stop a big truck as opposed to a passenger car. A passenger car traveling at 65 MPH requires about 300 feet to stop and a big truck traveling at 65 MPH requires about 525 feet to stop. If you’ve been injured as a result of an encounter with a big truck we can help.
