New Years Eve And Super Bowl Sunday have met their match when it comes to deadly car crashes. August 2 has been the deadliest day of the automotive year from 2012 to 2016. More people died on this day than any other day of the year according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety… A total of 505 people were killed in automobile crashes on this day. They even think they know the reason.
The reason isn’t icy roads or even drunk drivers. It’s sunny skies, vacation travelers, number of miles driven and a lot more cars on the road. These are the same reasons August is the deadliest month. Their research showed more than 15,900 fatalities during that span of time. They found drivers are more careful on icy roads and when they anticipate drunk drivers… on vacation in August they don’t expect to encounter either. People tend to be a just a little more reckless and exercise a little less caution on vacation. The researchers could not come up with a reason that August 2 specifically was the single deadliest day of the year on the road.
Teresa Schultz is an Associate Vice President of Nationwide Insurance and she agreed that car count and miles driven were contributing factors. The Nationwide SmartRide program voluntarily tracks driving habits and they’ve arrived at a formula that helps to predict the likelihood of a crash. Things like increased stress, fast acceleration, hard braking, idle time and insufficient sleep lead the list. Not only are these present on a family vacation, but are a threat every day.
