A Southern California Lyft driver is accused of falling asleep behind the wheel, crashing into a light pole in Tustin and ultimately killing his 70-year-old passenger. The Lyft driver was charged with manslaughter along with other violations. Andy Van Pham, 30, was driving his vehicle when he allegedly fell asleep near Jamboree Road and Patriot Way. Pham ultimately crashed into a light pole at around 7 a.m. on April 4 according to the Tustin police department spokesperson. The passenger has been identified as Margie Quibol of Tustin. Quibol died of her injuries from the crash.
Pham was taken into custody on Wednesday, July 21 and is being held on $10,000 bail. Pham pleaded not guilty to the charges of manslaughter, possession of drug paraphernalia, providing false information to a police officer, and making an unsafe turn or lane change according to court records. Pham was fired from Lyft and the company said in a statement it would assist law enforcement authorities however possible.
