The Elk Grove Police Department is reminding everyone over the Memorial Day Weekend to buckle up and keep children in child safety seats. The 2022 “Click It or Ticket” campaign will run from May 23 to June 5 and the Elk Grove Police Department will have additional officers on patrol actively looking for drivers and passengers who are not wearing a seat belt. This enforcement action includes any vehicle where a child is not properly secured in an approved child safety seat.
“Wearing a seat belt should be an automatic for all drivers and passengers,” Elk Grove Police Department, Traffic Lieutenant, Brian Schopf said. “It’s the safe thing to do, especially when it comes to securing children in child safety seats.” National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) statistics show that almost 11,000 people were killed in crashes nationally in 2020 who were not wearing seat belts. In California over 750 people were killed in crashes in 2020 who were not wearing seat belts. The number of people killed in California who weren’t wearing seat belts is nearly 20 percent of all traffic deaths statewide.
California law requires every child to be properly restrained in an approved safety or booster seat until they reach the age of 8, or are at least 4 feet, 9 inches tall. Children under age of 2 must ride in a rear-facing seat unless the child weighs 40 or more pounds or is 40 or more inches tall. California has a primary seat belt law, which allows law enforcement officers to ticket someone for not wearing a seat belt without committing another traffic violation. Funding for “Click It or Ticket” was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
