Younger drivers using cellphones while driving to text, talk or post on social media may also exhibit additional unsafe behaviors behind the wheel, according to a new study. Researchers from the Science Foundation Ireland Research Center for Software, say talking or texting on a cellphone while driving correlates with other dangerous driving practices for novice drivers. Some of these dangerous practices include driving while intoxicated, speeding, running red lights and passing other vehicles in an unsafe manner.
Researchers surveyed 700 German drivers with the average age of 21 about cellphone use and driving behavior. In Germany drivers are not legally allowed to drive a car alone until age 18. The research reveals a major issue with young drivers and their willingness to drive distracted. The study focused only on young drivers in Germany however researchers suggest it correlates with risky driving behavior in drivers in the U. S. The World Health Organization (WHO) calls car accidents the leading cause of death for people age 15 to 29 and that cellphone use is a significant factor in those deaths.
Their research revealed a strong connection between speeding in urban areas and talking on a cellphone. Also significant was the number of young drivers who were adept at hiding their phones while driving and disobeying the law. These attitudes could prove dangerous or even fatal not just for the younger drivers but also others on the roadway. The research also found a high percentage of these drivers using their phones to play music in the car often meaning drivers searching for music or switching music tracks when driving.
These behaviors are even more distracting than a phone call because changing music requires changing focus from having your eyes on the road while taking your hands away from the steering wheel and turning your attention away from the road. The researchers would like to see big tech employ sensors to block specific apps for young drivers whenever a vehicle is in motion. Auto manufacturers have a role to play in this as well. Infotainment systems being incorporated into vehicles sends a horrible message and encourages both young drivers and experienced drivers to engage in risky behaviors while driving. Its crucial parents model safe driving to their children. Modeling safe behavior can help create a new generation of safer driving.
