A Genesis SUV loaned to Tiger Woods for a golf tournament they sponsored in Southern California may be a big reason his life was spared. According to many reports Tiger Woods was driving a Genesis GV80 at the time of the crash. Woods lost control of the SUV he was driving in the Palos Verdes area on the morning of Feb. 23. The crash resulted in the vehicle rolling and left the world famous golfer with a shattered right shinbone and calf bone. Tiger underwent elaborate leg surgery the same day and is said to be recovering.
Many experts are heaping praise on the safety features of the car Woods was driving that contributed to his survival. The car was equipped with a cruise-control system designed to adapt to the driver’s habits along with noise cancellation to dampen street sounds. The $50,000 Genesis SUV comes with 10 airbags as standard equipment, a forward-collision warning system, an interior camera to warn drivers if they doze off at the wheel and includes evasive steering technology.
Genesis has won industry praise for design and safety features and competes head to head with the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the BMW X5 and Mercedes GLE. However, even though the airbags deployed as designed, the footwells of the car were not as well protected and this contributed to the injuries to his legs. Law enforcement at the scene said Woods was “lucky to be alive” after the crash.
The initial responding officer said Woods was buckled up which likely saved his life. Sheriff Alex Villaneuva said that the front end of the SUV was completely destroyed but the interior was more or less intact. Tiger’s crash is an example of how safety features can help prevent catastrophic injuries and fatalities. Automotive designers maintain that the safety features that can save lives aren’t “luxury” additions to vehicles. Many safety features cost very little to add to a vehicle. Living through a serious car crash is not an option only the wealthy should enjoy. Automakers have the technology to affordably include certain safety features in vehicles and including these safety features is certainly the right thing to do.
