There was a tragic crash Saturday night in Sacramento that should never have happened. The result was a 67 year old motorcycle motorcycle rider from Nicolaus being killed and 43 year old Careem Mayfield of Sacramento being remanded to the Sacramento County Main Jail. Mayfield’s bail has been set at $1 million dollars. The list of charges include vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a suspended license for prior DUI offenses.
According to the California Highway Patrol the Nicolaus man, whose name has not yet been released, was northbound on Highway 5 nearing Highway 50 when he was hit by a 2009 BMW. The rider was ejected from his bike and fell into traffic. The man suffered fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene by first responders. Careem Mayfield was the driver of the BMW and was suspected of being drunk according to the CHP responding officer. Mayfield admitted he had been texting at the time of the crash. Another driver who stopped at the scene was interviewed at the scene and released.
There are two causes of this crash that must examined. By the drivers own admission he was texting at the time of the crash and this is another case of death by distraction. According to the CHP at the scene the driver was also under the influence although we don’t know to what extent. What we do know is buzzed driving is drunk driving. Whenever you combine distracted driving with driving under the influence the result can be fatal. We pray for the motorcycle rider and his family.
