The family of Raiden Saechao learned in 2013 distractions have consequences. It was on December 13, 2013 when an on duty Sacramento Police Officer rear ended the Saechao family on interstate 80 at about 60 miles per hour.
The Saechao family was doing everything right. The Father of Raiden car was paying attention to the traffic conditions. Raiden was in an approved rear facing car seat in accordance with state regulations when the accident happened. The investigation showed Saechao was stopped in heavy traffic when Sergeant Halstead’s Ford Explorer came from behind at more than 60 miles per hour. The Explorer didn’t slow down and plowed into Saechao’s car pushing it into a passing big rig. Halstead also had children in his car.
The City of Sacramento initially denied the officer was on duty and later accepted liability. The reality is the police car rear ended another car not because he was in pursuit rather because he was either distracted or simply not paying attention to traffic and conditions. Raiden was taken to UC Davis Medical Center with major head injuries and died before Christmas 2013.
Court files say the officer denied all allegations against him and blamed Raidens family saying “the family failed to exercise ordinary care for their own safety” at the time of the crash. Lawyers representing Sacramento filed documents denying Halstead was working for the city at the time of the accident and asserted that the family didn’t have enough facts to support their claim against the city. The $9.75 million dollar settlement suggests otherwise.
