The technology that teenage and early 20 something’s love has finally caught up to their driving… many of them are not at all happy about it! As we are monitored more and more by companies and government someone has finally devised a way to help parents keep an eye on their young drivers and get real time information to change behaviors while there is still time.
There is nothing more difficult than sitting with a parent of a child who was killed in a car accident and then learning that the child was either partially or completely responsible for the event that took their life. Let’s face it, kids change when they get behind the wheel of a car. After years of video driving games and watching their parents drive while eating, talking on the phone (Still illegal) eat, read and the other things we do that takes our attention away from the task at hand, our teens are doing what they have been taught by us. As a result that first taste of freedom from Mom & Dad can lead to a deadly combination. Kids sometimes get injured, often severely and some even die!
Newer Fords have an option called McKey. You can give your new driver a specific key that will limit the cars performance. There are other devices that can be employed to achieve a similar result. Most cars today have something called an OBD (On Board Diagnostics Computer) and you can plug something into this that will record speed, acceleration, braking strengths that may indicate that your child is driving irresponsibly. Some systems like this require you to remove the piece from the port while others e-mail you a report and others will actually send you a text message if certain limits you pre-set are exceeded or if the device is removed.
A search online for “teen driving monitors” will deliver you numerous products to help you in this regard. Many insurance companies are testing these and a few are ready to mandate their use in exchange for a slightly lower rate. Saving money is one thing but the company can never remove the driving privilege… Only Mom & Dad can do that! Given sufficient information and they just might! With all this said we are still happy these were not around when we were learning to drive!
