Family members of four passengers killed in the ill-fated helicopter crash with Kobe Bryant and his daughter have joined the NBA stars widow and filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the companies that owned and operated the aircraft. The suits were filed on behalf of three members of one family and a woman who helped coach Bryant’s 13 year old daughter. Due to the lingering effects on the COVID-19 shut down the complaint was filed Sunday April 19 in Los Angeles Superior Court.
The lawsuits come about two months after Bryant’s widow Vanessa and the mother of Gianna also sued Island Express Helicopters Inc. who operated the Sikorsky and its owner Island Express Holding Corporation. A person who answered the phone at Island Express declined to comment. The new lawsuit differs from the lawsuit filed by Vanessa Bryant in that the pilot is not specifically named. All lawsuits allege negligence.
The initial National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) report stated there was no sign of engine failure from the wreckage recovered. The pilot had nearly navigated out of a blinding cloud bank when the craft abruptly turned and plunged into the mountain. The suit filed by Vanessa Bryant alleges that the pilot Zobayan was both careless and negligent to fly in the fog and should have aborted the flight.
