Allegations that defective Goodyear tires have killed or injured 95 during the past 2 decades are finally being taken seriously by the government. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) began investigating Goodyear Tires Model #G159 after a judge ordered the release of Goodyear data which had been sealed under court orders and settlement agreements.
Lawsuits and safety advocates allege the tires were designed for delivery trucks and not designed for recreational vehicles that travel at highway speeds for extended periods of time. The allegation is Goodyear kept the tire problems secret for years by settling cases and getting judges to seal the records of the settlement. Despite the current allegations the tires have not been recalled.
The current investigation covers about 40,000 tires made from 1996 to 2003. In a letter to Goodyear the NHTSA says the tires resulted in 95 injuries or deaths and did not specify the source of the information. The non-profit Center for Auto Safety and Public Justice is seeking a full records release to the public which was opposed by Goodyear and currently the document production is delayed pending an expected appeal by Goodyear.
