Ford is recalling more than 950,000 cars and trucks worldwide to replace potentially defective Takata air bag inflators. The passenger air bag inflators can explode and hurl shrapnel into the occupant. This recall includes over 750,000 vehicles in the U.S. and is part of the largest recall in the nation’s history.
Takata negligently used the chemical Ammonium Nitrate to create an explosion to inflate the air bags. This chemical is known to deteriorate over time due to heat and humidity and as a result will explode with excessive force. This excessive explosion can blow apart the metal canister designed to contain the explosion and has killed at least 23 people and injured hundreds. Ford says it doesn’t know of any injuries in vehicles included in this recall.
Victims of Takata air bag defects have suffered major or catastrophic injuries consistent with stab wounds. Anyone who has been injured by these defective air bags can seek compensation for damages including medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, pain and suffering and emotional distress. Families who have lost a loved one as a result of these defects can file a wrongful death lawsuit seeking compensation for medical and funeral costs, lost future income, pain and suffering and loss of love and companionship.
