Harbor Freight Tools recently recalled 1,100,000 folding knives after 7 cases of moderate to severe lacerations and 4 of these were sufficiently severe to require immediate medical attention. USA Today reports that the locking mechanism could fail to engage when the blade was open which could pose a safety hazard to the operator.
The knives were sold over an 11 year period of time at a single store in Southern California. While the knives were considered to be inexpensive (about $5). The knives that are subject to the recall are about 3 inches in length and have an attachment so they can be held on a belt. The company is offering a refund of the purchase price or a gift card in exchange.
We are well aware that knives cause more injuries that disable people than any other hand held tool and over 400,000 people are injured every year due to knives alone. Knife injuries have been known to amputate fingers and sometimes knife injuries are life threatening according to the National Institute of Health.
