Harbor Freight Tools is voluntarily recalling about 350,000 propane heaters after learning that windy conditions may render the safety shutoff inoperable, posing a burn hazard. The specific issue is that strong winds may redirect the propane flame to the back of the unit and as a result melt the “tip switch” which acts as the safety cutoff. The result is should the heater tip over with the switch disabled, consumers may be burned.
The “One Stop Gardens” 15,000 and 30,000 BTU Tank Top Propane Heaters, the models affected by the recall, are designed to mount on top of a standard 20-pound propane tank and feature an “easy start” with variable heat control valve, high-efficiency heat reflector and safety shutoff. The “One Stop Gardens” models were sold at Harbor Freight brick and mortar stores nationwide and were also marketed online by harborfreight.com between December 2015 and April 2021. The 15,000 BTU model sold for about $45 and the 30,000 BTU model sold for about $75.
To date there are nine reports citing flame redirection to the rear of the heater and/or the tip switch safety feature melting. Three of the incidents resulted in burn injuries when the user attempted to turn the unit off. Harbor Freight is advising consumers to immediately stop using the recalled heaters and return them to their local Harbor Freight store. Harbor Freight is offering a full price refund in the form of a store gift card.
