July 9, 2024

Triple-digit temperatures are here just in time for the start of the California State Fair. Many people may not realize it but the first day we saw a 100-degree day in 2024 was June 5, 2024. The summer has been hot and it appears there are more hot days to come. There are some who underestimate the impact of the coming high temperatures and heat-related illness may only cause mild discomfort in some and in others it may lead to catastrophic injuries or death.

Heat illness is typically caused by a combination of unusually high temperatures and physical exertion. When someone combines these factors, it may cause excessive sweat complications that range from mild heat cramps to life-threatening illnesses caused by heat stroke. Fortunately, there are many things that you can do to prevent heat-related illnesses. Here are a few ways to stay safe…

Dress For Heat Illness Prevention. Whenever you anticipate being outside, it’s wise to wear clothing that removes moisture from your body. May people traditionally opt for cotton but sweat often pools up in cotton garments. There are variations of nylon or polyester engineered to maximize moisture removal. Coolmax fabric is polyester processed to remove sweat while being more breathable than typical synthetic fabrics. Wearing a hat to keep your head and neck safe and even having small towels dipped in ice is a great way to keep cool in the heat.

Stay Hydrated. Hydration is important year-round and critical in the summer months. Never underestimate how quickly the sun can drain water from your body. The combination of intense heat and extreme dryness can leave you dehydrated even if you’re not engaged in physical activity. To prevent dehydration, drink sufficient water or keep a sports drink with electrolytes on hand. Drinks high in caffeine or sugar, along with well as with alcoholic beverages should be avoided as they tend to further dehydrate you. If your mouth is dry and you feel thirsty you are already dehydrated.

Plan Physical Activities. Whether you’re working out, going on a hike, or just out and about you should plan physical activity carefully. When you plan on being outside make sure that there are shaded areas or an air-conditioned facility nearby in case you start to feel overheated.

Avoid The Outdoors During Peak Heat Hours. Utility companies charge more for power during the heat of the day and following their lead is a smart way to plan. Many cities in our region will reach peak temperature around 4:00 p.m. Avoid extended outdoor activity around that time. Those who prefer outdoor exercise should go in the early morning or evening. The best plan is to be in a cool, air-conditioned environment during the hottest times of the day.

Listen To Your Body And Take Frequent Breaks. In addition to these tips, you must listen to what your body is telling you. When you feel tired you should find some shade or a bench and give your body some rest. The moment you start to feel thirsty you need to drink some water or buy a cold beverage as soon as possible. It’s critical to take action when you feel the slightest discomfort. Heat related illness can attack without notice and have devastating consequences.

Never in my life did I think I would recommend an attorney. Somehow God sent this angel of an attorney to assist me in my personal injury lawsuit. I was told by lawyers in Bakersfield that my lawsuit was frivolous because there was money in it.
