Honda America and Chrysler announced yesterday that they are expanding the recall of Takata Driver Side Air Bags installed in cars they manufacture from 11 states to nationally. Honda has already notified car owners in the first 11 states that these air bags were causing serious injuries and deaths. Chrysler is instituting their first recall for this issue.
We take issue with expanding the recall from 11 states to nationally when that should have been done from the start. There is little dispute that these airbags are in cars sold in all 50 states. The dispute comes down to limiting recalls and trying to deflect responsibility. That behavior is irresponsible in our opinion. When a company is aware that a product they are responsible for is known to cause injury they must step in and do the right thing. In this case Honda and Chrysler finally did the right thing and are finally working in the consumers best interest.
As injury advocates we see this daily. When a hospital has a Doctor on staff that has frequent poor outcomes, someone needs to step in and deal with it. When a store has a known defect that is hurting people it must be brought into compliance. When a car company has a product that they ordered and installed and then that product causes injuries they are required to do the right thing. The known issue with these air bags is that when they deploy they are sending pieces of shrapnel into the face of the driver causing lacerations, contusions and even 5 deaths. Air bags are designed to limit occupant injuries, not create them!
