Fiat Chrysler is recalling more than 154,000 Jeep and Dodge vehicles because of a brake-system issue. The automaker reports a faulty brake-system component installed on some vehicles earlier this year may cause bubbles to form in the brake fluid, which could increase stopping distances.
At this point in time there haven’t been any reports of accidents or injuries due to this issue according to Fiat Chrysler. The problem wasn’t discovered by the manufacturer. The manufacturer of the part in question alerted the company who reported that as many as one third of the affected vehicles are still for sale on dealer lots. Fiat Chrysler reports that “dealers have been advised which vehicles are affected and are providing service accordingly.”
The vehicles recalled include SUVs and Minivans:
2018 and 2019 Jeep Compass SUVs… Manufacture date March 17 to June 21, 2018
2019 Jeep Cherokee SUVs… Manufacture date April 4 to June 21, 2018
2018 & 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan… Manufacture date April 11 to June 14, 2018
2018 Dodge Journey SUVs… Manufacture date April 12 to June 14, 2018
The problem is the rear brake-caliper pistons “may have an insufficient coating,” which could cause gas pockets to form and potentially reduce rear brake performance according to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The automaker says the brakes would continue to function however the “stopping distances may be increased.” Stopping distance is something drivers rely on and anything altering that without the driver’s knowledge has the potential for catastrophic consequences. The dealers will bleed, or drain, the vehicle’s brake-fluid system and refill it at no charge to owners.
