Recently analyzed data shows Interstate 5 from Del Paso Road to the Railyards Boulevard area is one of the deadliest highways in the entire state. “It’s crazy. It’s a lot of people coming into a few lanes all at once,” Natomas resident Daniel Sakaya said of the area. Data supplied by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows the actual numbers behind the study. MoneyGeek looked at the almost 400,000 miles of road across California and after analyzing over 4,400 roads from 2017 to 2019 they arrived at the opinion that I-5 from Del Paso Road to Railyards Boulevard is a great Highway to avoid whenever possible.
Over that time period, there were 13 fatal accidents and a total of 16 deaths. The study authors say drunk driving, speeding and distracted driving were all contributing factors. “In Sacramento County, 26% of fatal crashes were drunk driving-related. Compare those number to the state average of 27%,” Lizabeth Cole from MoneyGeek said.
The California Highway Patrol said there are other contributing factors as well. “A lot of semi-trucks on this roadway. When you combine semi-trucks and automobiles, the accidents that do occur can be deadly. They are typically more deadly because you have loaded trucks that are higher weight. You also have people that may be on this portion of the freeway they may be driving faster,” said North Sacramento CHP Public Information Officer A. J. McTaggart. The study’s author said November has the highest number of fatal wrecks, in part due to the congestion from Halloween and Thanksgiving-related travel. CHP adds that drivers can expect to see more officers on the road through the end of the year.
