In 2010 the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) called for features like beeps to alert drivers their car was still running without the key or fob in or near the car and in some cases to shut the engine off automatically. These safety features were easily accomplished with software updates and in the face of opposition from manufacturers the issue is still under consideration.
Toyota models including Lexus have accounted for almost half of total deaths. Ford has responded by including an alert system which gets louder and louder and then shuts the car off after the vehicle has not had the fob in or near the vehicle for 30 minutes. Owners of older vehicles remain at risk.
The SAE issued a recommendation in January 2011 for carmakers to install an externally audible alert and the same year the NHTSA proposed a rule to do much the same thing as the SAE rule. The auto industry opposed each recommendation and suggested that the issues did not meet the evidence standards of federal vehicle safety laws.
