The Los Angeles City Council voted to spend $6.1 million to settle a lawsuit filed by a motorcyclist to settle claims resulting from an accident in 2015. The city agreed to settle with Philip Alvarez in December 2018 and in early February 2019 the council voted 12-0 with 3 members absent to approve the settlement.
Alvarez was riding in San Pedro on October 11, 2015 when he encountered a series of holes in the roadway causing him to crash. Investigators hired on behalf of Mr. Alvarez learned these holes were caused by city employees using surveying equipment. At the time of the crash Alvarez was working as a casual longshoreman. He sustained a severe brain injury and will never be the same. He will likely be reliant on his family for the rest of his life and will be unable to work.
Spending by the City of Los Angeles on legal disputes and dangerous roads has increased in recent years and in 2017 alone the city paid out $200 million in legal settlements and other court judgements. A different jury found the city at fault and ordered them to pay $23.7 million for an improperly designed intersection that lead to Thomas Guilmette, a 59 year old Northrup employee striking a car that had inched into traffic. The jury found that had the intersection been properly designed the accident would likely never have happened.
