Established in 1956, National Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling – and encourage more folks to giving biking a try. This National Bike Month will necessarily be different. The stay at home order during the coronavirus pandemic has prompted many people to ride their bicycles for exercise or just as a reason to get out of the house. These factors have prompted CHP Commissioner Stanley along with the State Office of Transportation Safety (OTS) to remind drivers that more people are out on the streets biking for exercise, recreation and mental health.
Many of the traditional CHP sponsored events held statewide to bring attention to bicycle safety month have been postponed or cancelled. Officials warn that because of the pandemic and the increase in riders, safety precautions and safe driving habits are more important than ever. With fewer cars on the road there may be some who are lulled into a false sense of security. Commissioner Stanley shared statistics that over just the last 5 years almost 800 cyclists have been killed and over 55,000 riders injured on California roadways.
Motor vehicle drivers are reminded to give bicyclists extra room when passing – at least three feet is required by law. When turning right, drivers should look over their right shoulder to scan for bicyclists, especially when crossing into a designated bike lane. Before opening a car door, drivers should always look for passing bicyclists, especially when next to a bike lane.
