The California Office of Transportation Safety (http://www.ots.ca.gov) granted $529,000 to The Elk Grove Police Department to continue and enhance their traffic enforcement operations. The money is earmarked to continue and upgrade programs intended to reduce the frequency of crashes that result in serious injury or death. “By increasing enforcement of traffic laws and focusing on high-risk areas, our goals is to reduce dangerous driving behaviors, prevent crashes, and make our roads safer for everyone,” Elk Grove Police Department Lieutenant Jason Bolfango said.
The grant will fund increased DUI checkpoints and patrols focused on stopping suspected impaired drivers and driver enforcement operations targeting drivers in violation of California’s hands-free cell phone law. A portion of these funds will be used for officer training and/or recertification in the areas of Standard Field Sobriety Test (SFST), Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) and Drug Recognition Expert (DRE).
They included funds directed to enforcement operations focused on the most dangerous driver behaviors that put the safety of people biking or walking at risk as well as operations focused on top violations that cause crashes such as speeding, failure to yield, stop sign and/or red-light running, and improper turning or lane changes. Community presentations on traffic safety issues such as distracted driving, impaired driving, speeding and bicycle and pedestrian safety will be offered and collaborative enforcement efforts with neighboring agencies is included as well.
Our office applauds investments of this sort in the community. App’s like Nextdoor highlight some of the dangerous driving that happens in our community. Studies show increased visibility and awareness helps to alter driving behavior and that helps to save lives.
