The “Stay At Home” order has led to fewer crashes with the unintended consequences of more speeding and potentially more devastating accidents. These facts are from a study released by the UC Davis Road Ecology Center. With the state on lockdown traffic accidents have dropped by about half. However, in some parts of the state (including the Sacramento Region) the open highways have encouraged some drivers to exceed the speed limits and often those speeds reach into the triple digits!
Between March 19 and March 29 the CHP issued 543 citations for speeds over 100 mph statewide, more than a 30 percent increase. Officer Greg Zumstein, spokesman for the North Sacramento CHP office says “enforcement hasn’t changed as a result of the lockdown. We’re still out there making stops.” He went on to say “there’s still people going to work, most people are still behaving the way they’re supposed to be behaving – there’s just more noticeable higher speeds.”
Crashes still happen!… Driving at speeds in excess of 100 mph increases reaction times and heightens potential bodily injury. The above UC Davis study found the average driver has a 5% chance of being involved in an accident. A subsequent UC Berkeley study found that for every 1% increase in speed the chance of an accident increases by 2% and the chance of a fatality increases by 4%. Driving at just 80 mph increases your chance of crashing by 31%, chance of injury by 49% and chance of death by 71%…. Keep in mind that accidents also happen on surface streets and rural roads!
