Accidents associated with big trucks and blind spots are all too common. Crashes happen when a truck driver is unable to see a car and they can be deadly! Truck accidents happen and this is why their drivers are typically at fault in these types of accidents. Every big rig truck has blind spots. A blind spot is an area around the truck where a car cannot be seen.
The primary blind spots on big trucks include;
- Directly to the rear and back about 25 feet.
- Directly in front of the cab for about 15 feet.
- Driver’s side next to the mirror.
- Passenger side next to the mirror.
Blind spots make it difficult for the driver to see cars and this can result in crashes. Truck drivers are trained to monitor blind spots and to carefully check blind spots before moving into another lane. Drivers with a commercial driver’s license must demonstrate proficiency in operating a big truck and this includes being aware of blind spots. Drivers are supposed to keep tabs on cars around the truck and be aware that those who disappear may be in a blind spot.
The most common truck blind spot accidents include lane change accidents and rear-end accidents. California Vehicle Code (CVC) Section 22107 governs lane changes and states that a driver can only change lanes when safe and only after signaling. Blind spots do not excuse a truck driver from following this Vehicle Code. CVC Section 21703 provides that a driver of a motor vehicle shall not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent. Rear-end collisions happen because a motorist follows too close.
There are several reasons big trucks and their drivers cause accidents. The typical reasons include training, fatigue, traffic, speed, inattention, distraction and driving an illegal number of hours. The laws surrounding driving big trucks are clear, have been in effect for years and not universally followed. We’ve read the reports, have the experience and will help you.
