It was revealed this morning the son of longtime Sacramento television personality Mark S. Allen was one of four teenagers burned in a backyard fire accident in Lincoln. Police confirmed the accident happened at a Lincoln home when the teenagers were having an impromptu outdoor prom gathering and bonfire Saturday night. Each of the victims were 18 years old.
The Lincoln Police say the accident happened just before 2 am Sunday morning when someone at the party attempted to throw gasoline on a fire to get it going. The preliminary investigation revealed the lid of the gas can wasn’t properly secured which resulted in a much greater volume of gas coming out of the can than was expected. At least some of the attendees were students at Lincoln High school. Two of the four victims suffered severe burns and were transported to the UC Davis Burn Unit.
“It was just them trying to start a fire and they were having issues starting the fire… one of them decided, ‘Hey, I’m gonna throw some gas on here,'” Lincoln Police Department Sgt. Jeromy Henson said. “From what I understand, the cap wasn’t totally on correct or wasn’t on at all and it probably ended up using more gas than they anticipated and it turned out to be pretty tragic.” The police went on to say that alcohol was not a factor in the accident. “It was a pretty horrific event. It was completely accidental. These guys are all friends,” Henson said. “It was just one split second of a bad decision that, unfortunately, two kids are gonna be dealing with for a lot of years probably.”
Accidents like this remind us that gasoline and fire offer the potential of tragic outcomes and should never be combined. In any situation when you have a bonfire of any sort and even near a barbeque, having a fire extinguisher, first aid kit and a responsible adult in attendance is critically important. Accidents like these also remind us to carry adequate levels of home liability insurance because with accidents come the potential for liability. We pray for the complete recovery of these victims.
