Americans associate holiday weekends with leisure time filled with food, family and friends. The July 4th holiday is unique in that it includes fireworks as the nation celebrates America. These celebrations often include the responsible consumption of alcohol. Alcohol consumption becomes dangerous whenever anyone makes the decision to drink and drive. This includes driving while just being a little buzzed or when high. As a result of this irresponsible behavior a dramatic increase in drunk driving arrests and car accidents occur.
This was the case in California over the 2019 July 4th holiday weekend. According to the CHP, almost 600 suspected drunken drivers were arrested statewide and a dozen people killed in crashes over the long July 4th holiday weekend.” CHP began a maximum enforcement period on July 3rd that continued through Sunday July 7th. It was reported that almost 600 DUI arrests were made between 6 p.m. July 3rd and 6 a.m. July 5th. This is an increase over 2018 when 389 drivers were arrested for drunk driving in a 30-hour period. This averaged out to an arrest about every 5 minutes.
The CHP urges drivers not to drive while intoxicated over holiday weekends and have even taken to Facebook and Twitter with the reminder “We’re Out here!!!” Still too many drivers chose to drive while intoxicated. These drivers caused several crashes which resulted in 12 wrongful deaths and that total included two pedestrians. The most tragic aspect of about these accidents is that DUI crashes and deaths are totally preventable. Intoxicated individuals have options to use a ride-sharing app such as Uber or Lyft to get home, plan ahead to select a designated driver, or take public transit. Drivers should never get behind the wheel when intoxicated, buzzed or high.
