A Friday night enforcement campaign by Elk Grove Police and officers from other jurisdictions resulted in the arrest of several suspects. Additionally, the police impounded several vehicles including one driver for driving under the influence. The enforcement campaign was initiated in response to numerous complaints about hazardous driving from neighborhoods around the Elk Grove area.
The results from the Friday night enforcement include 80 vehicles stopped, 50 citations were issued along with 8 vehicles towed. The vehicle stops led to three people being arrested for reckless driving and one for driving under the influence. These illegal reckless driving and racing events often are referred to as “sideshows” tend to increase as the weather begins to warm up and are often organized via social media.
There was a similar sideshow event on February 3rd in Stockton where Deputies from the San Joaquin County Sideshow Task Force seized nearly 90 vehicles from a sideshow. The sheriff’s office says the task force was able to infiltrate the group, gathering intelligence about the intended location for initiating sideshow activities. As a result, more than 150 people were detained following the sideshow, several of whom were arrested. Sheriff Patrick stated publicly that instead of impounding the vehicles, they are being held as evidence. “I wouldn’t waste your time coming out here or calling about your car because it’s going to sit until a judge or DA tells us to let it go,” Withrow said. The department is also seeking court orders to destroy any vehicles they deem dangerous, according to the report. Withrow warned that “future sideshow activity will be met with the same level of enforcement.”
Events like this are illegal and extremely dangerous for both the participants and the unsuspecting public. As we saw in both of these events, many of the drivers exceed the speed limit, drive under the influence, are often in possession of illegal drugs or weapons and when the police show up, they are more concerned with escape than the safety of themselves, their passengers or the general public. Please be very aware as you drive anywhere in the Sacramento Valley.
