The headline suggests that a few drivers in the area may well be reading this article while driving on Highway 99 while drinking coffee, using an electric shaver or applying make-up while texting the office. The reality that Sacramento drivers are the third worst in the nation comes from a 2018 study where only Riverside, California and Omaha, Nebraska were ranked worse. A subsequent study done by quote wizard moved Sacramento from third worst to second worst.
For many years Sacramento was considered a small town and that’s how many people drove. The 1990’s were a time of minimal congestion outside of rush hour and the few areas where traffic merged from one area of congestion to another. The last 20 years has brought an unexpected and largely unplanned increase in population. When the increase in population is combined with a highway system incapable of handling the population increase bad things happen. In short, congestion increased while driver patience and traffic enforcement did not. It appears Sacramento drivers are still not accustomed to driving in congestion and as a result are more confused and angry.
City, County and State budget constraints have led to an actual decrease in traffic enforcement in the Sacramento region measured in a per-capita manner. Sacramento Police Department cut their traffic police to the bone in the mid 2000’s. A big factor in traffic safety is the likelihood a traffic violator will be cited for overly aggressive driving. People brag on social media that they could drive around mid-town at 80mph, ignore stoplights, stop signs and crosswalks, and as long as they avoid The State Capital area where the CHP patrol, they will not be bothered by anyone.
Driving conditions fail to provide a reason for how dangerous it is to drive here. There’s no snow, minimal amount of rain and without rain, fog is not a big factor. Sacramento sees more truck traffic than most areas and most of these trucks tend to pass through without stopping. Trucks tend to disrupt traffic flow. Caltrans erected a “Trucks OK” sign over the second to the left lane on local highways and Interstate-5 and many trucks stay in that lane as a result. This has resulted in a nonstop line of trucks in the second to the left lane. All of our 3 lane freeways have this issue, but I-5 is a big issue. The congestion here upsets drivers and upset drivers don’t always make good decisions.
