Segway, who claimed that their two wheeled transporter would revolutionize how people get around is ending production of its namesake vehicle. The Segway PT which is popular with tourists and legendary for its high profile crashes will be put out to pasture on July 15, 2020.
In its first decade of production the Segway PT became popular in the security and law enforcement arenas for being a quick and reliable way for officers to respond to requests for service. Later, more and more uses cropped up in the areas of vacation use and sightseeing tours. The vehicle was used throughout North America, Europe, Asia, South America and the Middle East.
The Segway PT carries a standing passenger on a wide platform. The Segway PT was challenging for many to ride because the rider had to be balanced at a specific angle for the vehicle to move forward. During use if the rider’s weight shifted too much in any direction it could easily spin out of control and cause a severe crash. The problem was so pervasive that many cities banned its use.
Ten months after British Millionaire Jim Heselden bought the company he died when riding the Segway PT after plunging off a cliff. In 2003 President George W. Bush also crashed but was able to avoid surgery while in Maine. In another incident a cameraman riding one ran over Olympic Athlete Usain Bolt after a race. If you ride a Segway PT we definitely encourage the use of all safety gear!
