57 year old Sabrina Call is the latest skydiver to fall to her death on Saturday April 17. This is another in a long string of deaths at the Skydive Center which is owned by Bill Dause. Dause you may remember was recently in the news after a $40 million judgment was awarded to the family of the previous victim who died in 2018. Dause was asked Monday how he will go on operating his business after a $40 million dollar judgement and his ongoing legal issues and he deflected a clear and cohesive answer. Skydive Lodi Parachute Center is the site of 22 recorded deaths since opening in 1981 and nine of those deaths have occurred since 2016, according to the FAA.
Sabrina Call fell to her death after her primary chute failed to open and her reserve chute became tangled with the primary chute. A Sheriff’s office spokesman referred to Call as an “experienced skydiver” and went on to say the FAA had launched an investigation. Dause himself said that “no one actually saw what happened until probably the last couple of hundred feet” and went on to say “she (call) had 2 parachutes out, entangled with each other that weren’t fully inflated and pointed toward the ground at a very rapid speed.”
Dause explained in an interview that he didn’t know if Call packed her own parachute though with her amount of experience she would have known how to. An employee at Skydive Lodi suggested her parachute was packed by a contract parachute rigger who remains unidentified. Dause said Call had u=in excess of 2000 jumps and had been away from the sport for many years. If the $40 million judgment from the 2016 death doesn’t serve to remove Dause from the business of skydiving permanently the FAA must step in and shut this dangerous skydiving operation down as they have in other states.
