For the second time in less than a week, Elk Grove Police have arrested a suspect in a deadly hit-and-run collision involving a pedestrian. Just before 3pm on April 4 officers again responded to a call of a vehicle versus pedestrian accident. This crash happened near Rose Park which is located close to Frye Creek and Deepdale Way in Elk Grove.
When officers arrived on scene of the most recent crash, they found a 67-year-old woman who had been struck by an unknown vehicle. The investigation revealed the woman had been walking on the sidewalk when she was struck by an unknown vehicle that had veered from the roadway. After striking the woman the offender drove through the park and fled the scene. Both the vehicle and its driver were located a short time later and detained by Elk Grove Police Officers.
The driver of the vehicle on April 4th has been identified as Micha Banks. Mr. Banks was arrested and booked at the Sacramento County Mail Jail and was charged with Vehicular Manslaughter, and Hit and Run resulting in death. The exact cause is under investigation by the Elk Grove Police Department. The victim’s name has not been released.
In the previous fatal crash Elk Grove Police arrested a 17-year-old suspect who allegedly struck a 53-year-old pedestrian and subsequently fled the scene on March 29th. The victim in that crash was pronounced dead at the scene and the coroner identified the victim as Barton Israel Rodriguez, 52, of Elk Grove. The incident was reported around 8:30 p.m. near the corner of Elk Grove Boulevard and Shorelake Drive in the Lakeside area near Interstate-5.
Elk Grove Police spokesperson Jason Jimenez reported that the police were notified about a person was lying down on a street. Investigators believe Rodriguez was walking across Elk Grove Boulevard when a westbound driver on Elk Grove Boulevard, struck him. Jimenez said that the pedestrian was not in a crosswalk. The driver of the suspect vehicle reportedly went to the Elk Grove police station a few hours after the collision.
Jimenez said that authorities learned that this vehicle had a passenger who was suffering non-life-threatening injuries at the time of the incident. A relative took the passenger to a local hospital and officers contacted this person there. Investigators believe that alcohol or drugs were not factors in this incident, Jimenez reported. The suspect was arrested on charges of vehicular manslaughter, and of committing a hit-and-run offense that resulted in injury and death. He was booked into juvenile hall. Authorities did not release his identity since he’s a minor.
