According to the CHP, 68 people were killed in crashes over the long Fourth of July weekend in California. Life will never be the same for any one of those families. The next statistic the CHP revealed was that nearly half of those who died were not wearing seatbelts. CHP also stated that officers statewide also issued more than 9,700 speeding tickets during the holiday enforcement period. For this weekend the enforcement period was defined as Friday night through Tuesday night.
The news got worse when it was learned Officers made 1,224 arrests for driving under the influence statewide. The 1224 arrests for driving under the influence means there was on average one arrest for every 5 minutes during the enforcement period. “All of these deaths were preventable, and the loved ones they leave behind will be forever impacted,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. “Traffic safety is everyone’s responsibility, and these statistics show us how much work there is still to be done.” Seat belt use is controllable, driving under the influence is controllable and obeying the posted speed limit are controllable acts. Other controllable acts include distracted driving and driving when overly tired or drowsy.
